Competition Terms and Conditions

Your feedback and recommendations are essential to ensure the quality of Our Local Expert.  We need to know what you think about the businesses we currently feature, and others you think are good enough to appear.

Please send your feedback using our recommendations page – you might even win a prize (drawn annually)!



Readers recommending a Teignbridge or Torbay business could win:

£50 to spend in the No.7 Wine Bar overlooking the harbour in Torquay.

Readers recommending East Devon businesses could win:

£50 to spend at Kings Garden Centre, Exmouth.

Readers recommending Exeter businesses could win:

£50 to spend on good quality meat from Pipers Farm, or a family voucher for Quay Climbing Centre.

Prize Winners

In March 2012, Yehudi Levine of Sneatharpe near Honiton enjoyed home-smoked food as part of the meal he won at the Holt in Honiton – read his review and see pictures here.

Earlier that month, Anne England from Kingskerswell was delighted to hear she’d won a meal at Riverford Field Kitchen, after recommending several local businesses that she uses and trusts, for our Teignbridge and Torbay guide.

In January 2011, Exeter builder Mark Davies picked Exeter reader Angela Samuels to win a meal at award-winning Topsham restaurant Oliva – famous for their tapas .  She increased her chances of winning dramatically by recommending 10 businesses (you are entered into the competition once for each business you recommend).

In November 2010, three readers were chosen from about 70 names to win a local prize.  Each reader had contacted us to recommend a quality East Devon businesses that they use and trust.

Douglas Hay from Colaton Raleigh enjoyed a meal at Oliva Mediterranean Restaurant in Topsham (Devon Life restaurant of the year 2008,9,10).

Jen Weatherall from Whimple, and Sheila Tongue from Exton, both won £25 of vouchers to spend at Joshua’s Harvest Store in Ottery St Mary - perfect for wholefoods, local food, specialist foods and gifts. 

Terms and Conditions of Reader Competition

You will be entered into the prize draw once for each business you recommend.

Recommendations for the East Devon competition to be received by 28th Feb 2018, winners to be notified before 31st March 2018.
for the Exeter competition to be received by 30th June 2018, winners to be notified before 31st July 2018.
Recommendations for the Teignbridge and Torbay competition to be received by 30th September 2018, winners to be notified before 30th October 2018.

No more than one prize will be awarded to any one entrant.  Winners will be drawn by the publisher, and the publisher's decision will be final. 

This Competition is organised by Nicholas Hall of Alexandria Road, Sidmouth, EX10 9HD, “The Publisher”.

The publisher reserves the right to cancel or amend the Competition, the Competition Notice or these Rules at any time without prior notice. Any changes will be posted within these Rules.

In the event of any dispute regarding the Rules, Competition Notice, conduct, results and all other matters relating to a Competition, the decision of The Publisher shall be final and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.

Qualifying Entrants

To qualify to enter the Competition you must have received and paid for services from the business you recommend.  The Publisher reserves the right to verify the eligibility of all entrants.

By entering the Competition, you hereby warrant that all information submitted by you is true, current and complete.

The Publisher reserves the right to disqualify any entrant if it has reasonable grounds to believe the entrant has breached any of these terms and conditions.

In the event that any entrant is disqualified from the Competition, The Publisher in his sole discretion may decide whether a replacement contestant should be selected. In this event, any further entrant will be selected on the same criteria as the original entrant and will be subject to these Rules.

Competition Entries

Each person’s name shall be entered once for each recommendation provided.

Competition entries must be made in the manner and by the closing date specified on the Competition Notice. Failure to do so will disqualify the entry.

There is no purchase requirement to enter the Competition, other than the purchase of services from the business recommended.

Proof of posting cannot be accepted as proof of delivery. The Publisher cannot accept responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft, destruction, alteration of, or unauthorised access to entries, or entries lost or delayed whether or not arising during operation or transmission as a result of server functions, virus, bugs or other causes outside its control.

Entrants should note that The Publisher does not accept responsibility for the return of any Competition entries.


Prize winners will be chosen at random, from all qualifying entries as per the dates specified in the Competition Notice. In all matters, the decision of The Publisher shall be final and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.

Prize winners will be notified by the same manner as the entry was received (telephone, letter, or Email).

Return of any prize notification as undeliverable, or failure to reply within 7 days of notification, may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. 

Only one prize per entrant will be awarded.

Claims for prizes must be made within the timescales specified by the prize suppliers.

Failure to claim a prize within this time or in the manner specified may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner.

Prizes are non-transferable and there is no cash alternative. The Publisher reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value at any time.

Prizes are awarded at The Publisher’s discretion and no prizes will be awarded as a result of improper actions by or on behalf of any entrant.

All materials costs, are the sole responsibility of the prize winner.

Intellectual Property Rights

Furthermore, any information submitted by you must be personal to and relate specifically to you. You hereby warrant that the information which you submit and/or distribute will not infringe the intellectual property, privacy or any other rights of any third party, and will not contain anything which is libellous, defamatory, obscene, indecent, harassing or threatening. If relevant, The Publisher reserves the right, but not the obligation, to screen, filter and/or monitor information provided by you and to edit, refuse to distribute or remove the same.


The publisher cannot accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the competition or as a result of accepting any prize. The Publisher is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software failure of any email or entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet, telephone lines or at any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrant’s or any other person’s computer or mobile telephone related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in the Competition.

Data Protection and Publicity

Winners may be requested to take part in promotional activity and The Publisher reserves the right to use the names and addresses of winners, their photographs and audio and/or visual recordings of them in any publicity.  The Publisher will only do this with the entrant’s consent.

Any personal data relating to entrants will be used solely in accordance with current UK data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the individual’s prior consent.  The Publisher will need to share winners’ details with the prize providers.

By entering the competition, the entrant agrees that The Publisher can use their recommendation and/or testimonial, also their name, for the purpose of inviting new businesses to feature in Our Local Expert.  Entrants can forgo this agreement and still enter the competition, but they must declare this to The Publisher.


The Competition and the terms and conditions of this agreement will be governed by English law.
